Monumental Limestone Mantel for a Terrace Fireplace

A genuinely monumental piece of reclaimed French limestone: one deep lintel shelf carried on battered block jambs that widen as they meet the paving. There is no carving at all, and none is wanted. The stone is scorched and water stained along the lintel, which is how you know it burned for a couple of centuries before it reached us. Installed here on a Mediterranean terrace with a herringbone brick firebox and an olive grove beyond.
