Limestone Mantel Carved with Doves and a Laurel Wreath

An unusual and very old survivor. The frieze is carved in shallow relief with facing doves and trailing swags either side of a central laurel wreath, and the corbel jambs finish in carved foliate brackets. The grey limestone is deeply weathered, with losses along the shelf edge that we have deliberately left alone. Photographed in a panelled room with stained glass and a red brick herringbone firebox. This reclaimed limestone mantel is for sale and belongs in a library, a panelled study, or a collector's room.
