Limestone Mantel with Pierced Interlace Frieze
The frieze is not carved in relief but cut clean through, an openwork interlace of strapwork bands turning around a central rosette so daylight passes behind it. Below, the jambs sweep out as deep scrolled corbels onto stepped plinth blocks, and a wrought iron ring is still set into the stone. Photographed against black in the studio, at an angle, so the depth of the piercing reads properly. This reclaimed limestone mantel is for sale. It belongs in an old world library, a wine room, or a beamed great room.
